J.P. Walz comes to Odessa College after coming off a two-year stint at Langston University (2022-2024), and working under head coach Chris Wright. In his two seasons with the Langston men’s basketball team he served as special assistant to the head coach. Walz assisted with daily coaching duties. In his second year Walz was involved with film breakdown and game planning.

Langston University finished the season at 35-2 and made their first NAIA National Championship appearance in program history. The Lions also picked up the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament titles for the second straight year. While at Langston University Walz was apart of 66 wins and 5 losses along with having the largest turn around at any level in college basketball history.

Walz came to Langston University from the University of Fort Lauderdale, working for head coach Anthony Anderson. During his inaugural season at Fort Lauderdale, Walz served as the special assistant to the head coach and was involved in all aspects of the program as well as player development. Walz was apart of starting a first year program that went onto the sweet 16. The native of Spirit Lake, Iowa played basketball for Spirit Lake High School in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He then attended South Dakota State University where he served as basketball manager for one year.
