Former OC Golf Standout Wins the PGA Web.com Nova Scotia Open

Abraham Ancer, a former Odessa College Wrangler from 2010, earned his first Championship of his professional golfing career yesterday, July 6th 2015, in the PGA Web.com Nova Scotia Open.  In his final round, Ancer shot a 68 to claim his first win on the Web.com Tour.  He rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt on the first play-off hole, to beat Bronson Burgoon.

Ancer, originally from Mexico, but born in McAllen, Texas -  competed for the Wranglers for only one year - but earned many "firsts" for Odessa College during that one year.  After Odessa College, he transfered to and played for, the NCAA D-I Sooners, of the University of Oklahoma. Under the realm of current OC Head Coach, Paul Chavez, Ancer was the first player to earn All-American honors in back-to-back years within the NJCAA (at OC in 2010) and then through the NCAA (at OU in 2011.)  He was the first player for Coach Chavez to win four championship titles in a row; earning 5 championships total while at OC.  He was the first OC player to win "Freshman of the Year" honors, as well as "NJCAA Player of the Year" honors within the same year. According to the current Golfstat records, Ancer is the first OC player to lead the country in scoring average.  And he is now the first, and only, OC golfer to earn a victory on the Web.com tour.

In reflecting about Ancer, Coach Paul Chavez said he "knew he had the "it" factor... that internal drive to be the best.  His work ethic, attitude, and the will to win is what seperated him from the rest."

According to PGAtour.com, Ancer's win comes at the age of 24 years, 4 months and 8 days.  He collected a check for $117,000 from the $650,000 purse.  Ancer moved from No. 39 to No. 4 on the Tour money list through 14 of 21 season events.  Ancer becomes the 4th rookie to win on Tour this year.  He is the 3rd player from the University of Oklahoma to win on Tour.
