After a two-minute scoring drought in the first quarter, the Odessa College Lady Wranglers went full steam ahead to rout the Western Texas College Lady Westerners 76-32 in a Western Junior College Athletic Conference matchup Monday night at the OC Sports Center.
Odessa College got back into the win column after suffering a tough 69-61 loss to Midland College last week.
"I thought we were better tonight in a lot of ways," Odessa College head coach Ara Baten said. "I thought our defensive positioning was good most of the night.
"I thought our defensive intensity was better than it's been lately, but we've still got some things we need to clean up."
Dyana Offutt landed a jumper to give the Lady Wranglers a 14-2 lead with 6:03 in the opening quarter. Odessa College then closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to increase its lead to 18. Odessa College (12-4 overall, 2-1 WJCAC) capitalized on 12 first-half turnovers by Western Texas College. The Lady Westerners went 0-for-11 from the field in the second quarter.
Western Texas College finally got a small spark from Morgan Dial, who knocked down a 3-pointer with 6:40 left in the third quarter.
The Lady Wranglers answered back with a 3-pointer from Amanda Soderqvist to increase their lead to 38. After being held to single digits in the first half, Western Texas College scored 28 points in the second half, but it still wasn't enough to stop the Lady Wranglers.
Offutt led all scorers with 19 points while Yanina Todorova had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists. Kamryn Lemon grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
The Lady Wranglers shot 46.7 percent from the field. They finished with 28 points in the paint and created 24 points off Western Texas College's 19 turnovers.
Western Texas College (5-10, 1-3) was led by Sayanna Roy with nine points while Permian grad Klarrissa Cruz finished with seven.
The blowout win came at a good time for Odessa College.
"It felt a lot better because we had a rough time playing against Midland," Offutt said. "We finally got back into our flow of how we usually play.
"It felt a lot easier than against Midland because (against) Midland we were playing slower and here we started playing faster, quicker, getting into the motion of how we usually play teams."
