On a night where shooting was tough to come by, the Odessa College women's basketball team used its size and length to get the job done.
Freshman forward Geovana Lopes finished with a season-high 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench as the Lady Wranglers overcame a slow start to defeat Clarendon College 68-47 Monday night at the OC Sports Center.
Odessa College (14-4, 4-1 WJCAC) finished the game shooting just 33.3 percent from the floor, but it made up for it down in the low post.
The Lady Wranglers outscored the Lady Bulldogs 36-12 in the paint and outrebounded them 57-31 on the night.
"Looking at the big picture, it was nice to see our post players play as well as they did tonight," Odessa College head coach Ara Baten said. "They were aggressive in the post. That's a step forward for us."
Lopes was not the only post player to finish with a big night for Odessa College. Julan McDonald recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 13 rebounds in addition to five assists. Maria Guimares also had 10 points on the night for the Lady Wranglers.
"We just tried to have each other's back on the floor," McDonald said. "We have the wings' back and they have ours and as long as we work together, everything will be fine."
Every second opportunity became valuable considering neither team shot the ball well in the first quarter.
The first field goal for Odessa College did not come until the fourth minute of the game with a McDonald layup that put the Lady Wranglers up 4-2 early. After the Lady Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run, Odessa College tied the game twice more and closed the quarter with a Lopes layup to tie it at 10.
The second quarter is when the Lady Wranglers made their run. With Odessa College up 14-13 early in the quarter, Lopes and McDonald helped lead their team on a 14-0 run that put the Lady Wranglers up 28-13 late in the first half.
Kamryn Lemon capped off the run with a 3-pointer and later two free throws at the end of the half as Odessa College entered the break with a 30-18 lead.
Lemon finished with eight points, but added 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals on the night.
Clarendon College (7-14, 0-5) tried to keep pace in the second half from beyond the arc, but couldn't cut the deficit any closer than 12 points in the second half. The Lady Bulldogs did finish with nine 3-pointers on the night, including three from leading scorer Kelzie Orr.
Orr finished with 11 points on the night.
"There are some things we need to work on," Baten said. "We got lost a few times on defense and we just didn't execute on that end of the floor how we wanted to."
"Again, it was good to see those kids work the ball inside, be aggressive and make some plays."
Still, as they had done in the first half, the Lady Wranglers worked the ball inside to help spur the offense, building the lead to as many as 20 points to help seal their third straight conference win."
