Odessa College Captures Men's Title While Women Take Third At Sul Ross
The Odessa College Rodeo Team wrapped up the fall rodeo season with their strongest performance in Alpine, Texas at the Sul Ross College Rodeo, November 2-4. The Wrangler Men's team earned the team championship at the event after earning 490 points. The Wrangler Women's team earned third place behind Eastern New Mexico University and Weatherford College.
The Wranglers placed in all but one event at the 72nd annual Sul Ross Rodeo.
As has been the case all year the Men's team was paced by a strong performance in the bareback riding. Austin Williams earned his third rodeo championship of the year at the Sul Ross Rodeo. Williams scored 145 points on two head to win the event championship. Teammate BoDell Jessen finished sixth in the bareback riding. For the year Williams and Jessen are sitting first and second in the Southwest Region Bareback riding standings.
Jessen had a good rodeo at Sul Ross. Along with placing sixth in the bareback riding he also placed tenth in the steer wrestling and ninth in the tie-down roping. Fellow steer wrestler Kyler Dick placed fifth in the steer wrestling average with a two head total of 10.7 seconds. The Wranglers have a trio of steer wrestlers in the top ten in the regional standings after the fall season.
Breakaway roper Cassidy Clark finished tenth in the breakaway roping. Clark was first team WJCAC in the breakaway roping last year.
Saddle Bronc Rider Chase Zwiefel placed third in the saddle bronc riding at the Sul Ross Rodeo. Zwiefel has placed at the last two college rodeos and quickly moved into the top ten in the Southwest Region Saddle Bronc Riding Standings.
Freshman Kloe Gregerson placed sixth in the goat tying average. Gregerson tied two goats in 15.4 seconds to finish the fall season strong.
Maddy Dickens turned in the fastest time of the weekend in the barrel racing on her way to finishing second in the average. Dickens time of 15.4 seconds was good enough to win the round and solidify her spot as one of the top barrel racers in the Southwest Region.
Bull Rider Austin Allred was able to place in all five of the fall college rodeos in the Southwest Region. He is the only bull rider in the region to cover a bull at all five rodeos. Allred finished second in the bull riding at the Sul Ross Rodeo with two scores that totaled 153 points. Allred is leading the Southwest Region in the bull riding at the halfway point of the rodeo season.
"We had a strong showing at the Sul Ross Rodeo. We have a hard working group and we are really looking forward to the spring season," said Odessa College Rodeo Coach CJ Aragon.
The Wranglers next compete February 11th at the San Antonio Rodeo Showdown. Then they host the Odessa College Wrangler Rodeo February 22-24, at the Ector County Colisieum.
