Wranglers Finish Second At Vernon College Rodeo

The Odessa College Wrangler men's and women's rodeo teams competed this weekend at the Vernon College Rodeo.

A week after claiming the Men's team title at the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales, the Wranglers earned a second place finish in Vernon with 365 team points.  Tarleton University won the men's team title with 380 points.

The Wranglers were well represented for the second weekend in a row in the bareback riding.  Bodell Jessen, a sophomore from Utah, claimed the event championship in the bareback riding.  Jessen placed second in the first round of competition with a score of 75 points.  He then secured the championship with a 77 point, first place ride in the final round.  Teammate Wyatt Johnson earned the reserve championship in the event by finishing first in the first round and second in the final round.  Fellow bareback riders Harry Ash and Cole Hewett also placed in the bareback riding as well.

Bull rider Austin Allred continued his hot streak as well.  Allred won the bull riding at the ENMU rodeo and finished as the reserve champion at the Vernon College Rodeo.  Allred scored 81 points to earn the second place finish.

The Lady Wranglers finished third as a team at the Vernon College Rodeo.

Goat Tiers Maddy Dickens and TImmi Hutchings both placed in the goat tying.  Dickens finished with the fast time of the second round with a time of 7.6 seconds.  She also finished third in the average of the goat tying.  Hutchings placed sixth in the first round and seventh in the average.

Afton McCourt placed tenth in the breakaway roping with a 2.8 second run in.

"We have a talented group, and most of them have a year of experience competing in our region," said Coach Aragon.  "As a team they have high expectations and they have been putting in the work and the results are starting to show."

The Odessa Wranglers next head to Perryton, Texas October 13-15 for the Frank Phillips College Rodeo.
