OC Rodeo Team Kicks Off The 2017 Season

The Odessa College Rodeo Team Kicks of the 2017 Season

The Odessa College Rodeo Team kicked off the 2017 season with a Men's team title at the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales, New Mexico September 21-23.  The Odessa College Men's Team compiled 360 points to win the event.  Tarleton University finished second with 325 points and Clarendon College finished third with 300 points.

The Odessa Team was led by three first place event finishes.  Austin Williams, a sophomore from Marsing, Idaho, Earned the bareback riding championship with a two ride total of 148 points.  Williams placed in both rounds on his way to the event championship at the ENMU Rodeo.

Fellow Sophomore, Brock Powell of Aragon, New Mexico, earned the steer wrestling championship at the ENMU Rodeo.  Powell split first place in the first round with a 4.9 second run, then finished second in the second round with a 5.1 second run.  His two head total of 10.0 seconds was good enough to win the event by over a second.

The final event was won by Austin Allred, a sophomore from Castle Dale, Utah, won the bull riding event.  Allred was one of only two bull riders to cover for the weekend.  Allred was 76 points in the first round to take the win as both riders bucked off in the down pouring rain in the short round.

The Odessa College Rodeo Team had a very strong showing in the Bareback riding and the steer wrestling as well at the ENMU rodeo.  The Wranglers had five of the top ten Bareback riders and two of the top four steer wrestlers for the weekend.

"We have a good group of kids this year, talented and hard working," said Coach Aragon.

The Wranglers travel to Vernon College this weekend for the Vernon College Rodeo, September 28-30.
