Layne Ward claims bull riding championship at Howard College Rodeo

Howard College Rodeo

The Odessa College Rodeo Team competed at the Howard College Rodeo April 7-9th at the Big Springs Rodeo Bowl.

For the third time this spring Layne Ward, a freshman from Alamo, Idaho, claimed the bull riding championship.  Ward scored 72 points on one bull which was good enough to win the event title at the Howard College Rodeo.  Ward also earned the bull riding championships at the Odessa College Rodeo and at the Ranger College Rodeo this spring.  Ward is currently leading the bull riding in the Southwest Region.

Odessa College bareback riders Harry Ash and Austin Williams placed 5th and 9th respectively at the Howard College Rodeo.  Ash earned points in both rounds and the average, while Williams earned points in the first round.

Steer Wrestler Chet Boren placed for the second rodeo in a row.  Boren finished 7th in the steer wrestling event.  Boren placed on his first steer. In the final round, a broken barrier prevented him from placing higher.

Team Ropers Chance Price and Koty Kamm placed 4th in the average with a time of 21.5 on two steers.  The pair roped well despite having to rope in muddy conditions Saturday morning.

The Southwest Region schedule is beginning to wind down with just the Tarleton College Rodeo left on the schedule April 21-23, in Stephenville, TX.  Many Odessa Wranglers are in contention for earning a berth to the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming in June.
