Western Texas College Rodeo

The Odessa College Rodeo Team competed at the Western Texas College Rodeo March 31 through April 2nd in Snyder, Texas.  The Odessa College Men's Team earned the team championship at the event. "The team is doing well this spring.  We had a good rodeo in Brownwood and we did well at WTC.  We had some momentum heading into this weekend at Howard," said Wrangler Rodeo Coach CJ Aragon.

Sophomore bareback rider Austin Williams placed second in the bareback riding for the weekend.  Williams won the first round with a 77 point ride, then posted a 72 point ride in the short round.  His total of 149 on two was just one point short of winning the event championship for the weekend.

In the steer wrestling the Odessa Wranglers had a good weekend. Sophomore Ty Ellis won the first round with a time of 3.8 seconds.  Teammates Chet Boren and Jake Trujillo earned third and fourth in the first round respectively with runs of 5.0 seconds and 5.1 seconds.  Trujillo turned in a 5.1 second run in the short round to earn second in the steer wrestling with an average time of 10.2 seconds on two.  Ellis recorded a time of 7.1 seconds in the short round for a two head total of 10.9 seconds, which was good enough to place fifth in the average.  Boren received 6.7 seconds in the short round which was good enough to place fifth in the round and sixth in the average.

Team Ropers Cody Falconer and Rylie Clemons placed seventh in the team roping.  Bull Rider Bradie Gray split second in the first round of the bull riding with a 75 point ride.  With all of the bull riders bucking off in the short round the one score was also good enough for a second place split in the average.

The Odessa College Wrangle Rodeo Team has two rodeos remaining on their spring schedule.  This weekend they compete at the Howard College Rodeo in Big Springs, Texas.

Several Odessa Wranglers are in contention for a qualification to the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in June in Casper, Wyoming. "Right now we have two students who are sitting well to qualify for the CNFR, but with two rodeos to go we still have eight other students who have a solid chance to qualify.  We just need to finish the last two rodeos strong," said Aragon.
