The Odessa College women's basketball team got off to a strong start in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play, defeating Frank Phillips College 86-29 Wednesday at the OC Sports Center.
The Lady Wranglers improved to 8-3 overall, 1-0 in conference play.
"It was a big win for us," Odessa College head coach Ara Baten said. "It was good to get out to a winning start in conference play.
"Our kids played really well from top to bottom. I was really proud of our effort tonight."
Yanina Todorova scored a game-high 18 points for Odessa College, while Kamryn Lemon and Geovana Lopes each finished with 13 in the victory.
Jordan Taylor scored nine points to lead the Lady Plainsmen (2-6, 0-1), while A'yona Wilson had seven and Emeisha Fields had six.
The Lady Wranglers broke the game open with an 18-0 run in the first half to take a 33-7 lead with 5:00 remaining in the second quarter.
"I thought we were really good defensively," Baten said. "We were also able to generate some offense. We got some rebounds and created some turnovers. That's when we play our best."
Todorova's 3-pointer from the right side of the perimeter gave the Lady Wranglers an 8-0 lead to start the game.
Frank Phillips College's first points of the game came from a trip to the free throw line, ending a 10-0 surge by the Lady Wranglers.
The Lady Wranglers had three 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the game, building a 13-4 lead before a timeout with 4:59 left in the first quarter.
Odessa College ended the first quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 20-7 lead heading into the second.
The Lady Wranglers began the second quarter the same way they ended the first, going on a 5-0 run, extending their lead to 18 points.
A free throw by Jordan Taylor ended her team's scoring drought in the second quarter at the 4:37 mark.
Alasia Spivey scored off a rebound and the Lady Wranglers had a 41-11 lead late in the second quarter and took a 43-14 lead at the half.
Both teams began the second half on a cold note as neither side could get a basket through the first three minutes of the third quarter.
The Lady Wranglers quickly regained their footing, taking off on a 9-0 run for a 52-14 advantage midway through the third quarter.
Arielle Adams' outside shot extended the Lady Wranglers' lead to 55-14 late in the third quarter and Odessa College cruised the rest of the way to the victory
